How to get glowing skin on your wedding day
As a wedding planner, I know a lot about weddings. I’ll happily dish out all the details about flowers, entertainment, ceremony formalities, wedding timelines, and more. However, I’m out of my depth when it comes to skincare and prepping for that perfect wedding day glow. So I called in Sally Gilder, an aesthetician at Cape Aesthetics who’s is the go-to gal for your wedding day skin prep. Here’s what she recommends for glowing dewy skin on your wedding day.
"Whether your engagement is short or long, there is always enough time to improve your skin and have you feeling your best on the big day" says Gilder. She suggests finding a skin specialist, as soon as you start planning your wedding, to guide you through the months to come. The key to a radiant glow is a routine of regular treatments tailored to your specific needs combined with a home care regime.
Cape Aesthetics prides themselves on a comprehensive skin consultation prior to starting a treatment programme to ensure that your skincare will suit your budget and timeline. Sally compiled a few treatment options to suit different timeframes.
Treatments which require a course or series needs to be done six months in advance. These may include deep chemical peels, Venus Viva resurfacing treatments, Dermapen, or skin-boosting sessions. If you have never had Botox or fillers and are considering investing in these, now’s the time to try it out. Treatments that require the most amount of downtime need to be started at least three months before the wedding day.
With less than 3 months to go until your wedding day, you may want to do a course of skin tightening, resurfacing and rejuvenating treatments, which would generally be achieved using IPL, peels and Diamond Polar. There is still time to fit a Dermapen or Venus Viva or 2 in at this stage, but not enough time for a full course of these treatments.
A month before your wedding, we recommend Dermapen 4 MD treatment with PRP for enhanced penetration of active ingredients, low downtime, and an incomparable glow.
With a week to go before the big day, we recommend a ‘red carpet’ chemical peel coupled with a Diamond Polar skin tightening treatment. Your skin will appear plump, lifted, and hydrated without you needing any downtime afterwards.
It’s safe to have the final Diamond Polar treatment the day before your wedding for a dewy glow, and perfectly primed texture for make-up application.
A skincare programme designed specifically for you and carried out under the correct supervision will make your skin the last thing you have to worry about when you walk down the aisle.
Here's some more information about the treatments so you are fully informed:
Chemical peels help to accelerate cell turnover, allowing for better penetration of the active ingredients in your home care products. They also exfoliate your skin to unleash your healthy glow by revealing shiny new skin under dull, built up, dead epidermal cells.
What conditions do peels treat?
Cape Aesthetics offer a wide variety of chemical skin peels that can help to tackle skin conditions like acne vulgaris, rosacea, dehydration, and numerous signs of ageing. Some of these peels will cause a full epidermal shed, meaning that you will have 5 - 10 days of active visible peeling, while others exfoliate in-treatment and then focus more on hydrating, and have zero downtime whatsoever. We will provide you with all the advice and guidance regarding the most suitable facial skin peel treatment for your skin type, helping you to achieve your goals.
Dermapen4 is the gold standard of micro-needling. This system uses 16 medical-grade needles to create perfect channels into the dermal layer of the skin at a depth that can be set by the operator. These channels are controlled injuries in the upper part of the layer of your skin called the dermis, where collagen is made. While these channels are open, serums with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, amino acids, growth factors, vitamins, brightening peptides and co-enzymes are applied. The controlled injury is healed by the body and the production of new collagen is stimulated with the help of the active ingredients applied to the skin and the normal wound healing response of your skin.
What conditions do Dermapen 4 treat?
Dermapen4 is able to treat: skin laxity, wrinkles, crêpey skin, acne scars, enlarged pores, melasma and pigmentation.
Whether you're concerned about acne scars, deep wrinkles, or pigmentation, Venus Viva™ treatments can help by giving your skin a clearer, healthier, tighter, and more youthful appearance.
Venus Viva is the next generation of skin resurfacing, using tiny needles that transmit radio frequency generated heat (via patented NanoFractional™ Radio Frequency technology) into the dermal layer of the skin. The heat creates tiny micro-dermal wounds which alert the fibroblast cells responsible for the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid to stimulate the production of these. Since the wounds are so small, the treatment is much more tolerable than traditional ablative treatments like CO2 lasers, so Venus Viva procedures are relatively painless in comparison. We offer a topical numbing agent to provide comfort for the patient.
Venus Viva can be coupled with chemical peels to “combine” downtime and enhance results.
What conditions does Venus Viva treat?
Acne scars, deep wrinkles, dermal pigmentation, skin laxity, crêpey skin, enlarged pores, melasma and pigmentation.
Skinboosting involves the injection of tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid into the skin at a specific depth and dose set by the injector. This enhances skin elasticity and hydration, as well as brightening the skin, all from the inside! Because this treatment is injected, you are likely to have a few tiny bruises after treatment, and we recommend this in a course of 3 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart, with the last treatment at least a month before you say “I do”.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to target red and brown pigment in your skin, allowing it to erase sun-induced pigmentation, as well as capillaries that are visible on the surface of your skin. This treatment has little downtime (the pigmentation will darken before flaking off) but is often recommended in a series for the best results. It can also be combined with treatments like the Venus Viva or chemical peels for enhanced results and “combined downtime”.
Diamond Polar is a no-downtime treatment that tightens and lifts the skin through heat generated by pulsed electro-magnetic field and multipolar radio frequency. By raising the skin surface temperature, it stimulates the fibroblast cell numbers and activity. These cells are responsible for collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production.
The thermal effect increases the blood flow and oxygenation to the skin, reducing pain and inflammation, stimulating cell detoxification and regeneration, and overall repairing and building the quality of the skin.
This treatment is recommended in a series for lasting results but does show immediate results too. It’s the ideal treatment to have just before an important event like your wedding or bachelorette party, as you’d look radiant and refreshed.
